Our technology has changed a lot ever since the internet was invented.
In line with this, businesses have also changed their way of reaching more customers. One of the recent innovations that companies use nowadays to reach potential clients is through websites, and this is what most of us use to look for services and products online.
But how exactly does a product reach a customer even though no one actually actively looks for it?
This is where SEO comes in.
SEO, meaning Search Engine Optimization, is commonly used by businesses to advertise their products online. That's what it essentially does.
If you're a person who actively uses Google or any other search engine, you may have noticed a pattern that is commonly called "algorithm" in modern speak that allows you to search for the most relevant thing you are looking for when you are searching for a certain thing.
Take this picture, for instance.
A search for 'rubber ducks shop' would yield a search with an actual website of an online store that sells rubber ducks. The numbers that Google uses are used to yield this kind of result.
For a lot of online companies and businesses, this means a lot to them.
Most people use Google and try to click for the website that has the most relevant search for their queries, and usually, it's the one that can be seen at the top.
Since most businesses are not able to simply pay their way into allowing their products and services to be the top search result, they have to find other ways into allowing them to become the top relevant result. And that's where SEO companies roll in.
Now that I've become employed under a call center company as a content writer, one of the responsibilities that I have is to make this possible for their client.
To be completely honest, the job description of 'content writer' is a form of false advertisement when I finally worked.
The role of a content writer is to create informative articles (like this one) that are usually in the form of blog posts in websites in order to advertise or vouch for a certain product or service, if the main topic is about advertising a certain product or service.
However, I am currently employed in a company that does things a little bit different.
It's what people call 'site building'.
Since SEO companies focus on making their clients' websites the most relevant search, one of the strategies that they use is to create links of their clients' websites on blog posts and other related websites in order to attract customers into clicking the link.
And basically, that's what I'm doing, but much shorter.
It's got its perks, since I'm not usually a person who is knowledgeable about the more practical stuff that involves most of the everyday items and services that revolve around conveniences.
One of the advantages that I'm getting with the job is the fact that I'm gaining more knowledge about some of the strategies that SEO companies use in order to create their clients' websites as the most relevant search in Google.
Another is that I'm becoming more knowledgeable about the more mundane stuff that most millenials are no longer adept at ever since they got a hold of smartphones and computers. It usually involves homeownership, real estate, and taxes.
The main downside is that the knowledge that I'm gaining is mostly focused on U.S.. As a person who lives in the Philippines, there may be some things that differ when it comes to homeownership and a home buying process that doesn't apply to American standards.
However, it's still nice to know that I'm able to hold a job that allows me to read on different things that I wasn't even aware of.
Now, I'm about to reach my anniversary working in that company, and I can't say that I'm less than satisfied with what I'm currently doing.
After all, I do get the option to work from home, and that means that I won't have to experience long hours commuting to work all of the time, even though it's just an hour away from my home.
