The Importance of Gardening During COVID-19 Season

Most of us don't have any true knowledge about gardening in our own homes due to our busy schedules for the past year, and now that COVID-19 has thrown off our sense of "normal", there will be some who won't know what to do with their lives.

While some of us are starting to learn how to cook our own food instead of relying on takeaways, there is another vital skill that you need to have in order to have better chances of survival in times like this: growing your own food.

Older generations have taken up gardening as a hobby for a good reason: it is a great method of therapy. According to Soga et. al (2016), there are various health benefits to gardening, such as reductions to stress and anxiety, and this is one of the reasons why people who take up gardening are generally happier in comparison to their non-gardening equivalents.

Nowadays, we are experiencing a lot of panic and anxiety due to the unexpected changes we are facing in our environment, and though it is natural for us to adapt, there are always others who are slower to coping with changes than some.

Gardening will help you reduce your worries since you will be able to do something productive in your own home and time, while being able to see the rewards of your work with minimal effort.

In addition to that, resources are becoming scarce because of the new restrictions that are being imposed by governments in order to ensure everyone's safety. ABS-CBN reports that there are now communities in Caloocan which will not allow residents to go our of their homes, and this means that they will not be allowed to go out to the local markets to buy their own food.

If you are no longer able to buy your favorite greens in the market for any reasons due to the pandemic, then this will be a way for you to save up on money while allowing yourself to eat for months to come.

Gardening is a creative way to combat the economic and mental health issues that will rise up in these coming months, as you can become more economically sustainable while combating stress.

Not all crops need spacious areas in order to grow either: Balcony Garden Web says that it is possible to grow lettuce and other vegetables in a container! If you have any bottles and old pails lying around in your home, then you can use that to your advantage in order to grow things.

If you have enough patience and effort, then you can really make the most during COVID-19 season. After all, there is still no telling when things will go back to their old schedules, so it's best to make the best of things while we wait for them to come to an end.
